'These viruses are serious, dangerous, and life-threatening,' warns Public Health Commissioner Dr. Robbie Goldstein, as the state grapples with a severe early flu season. 'It's early in the season yet, and it would not be surprising to see more, sadly,' says Dr. Larry Madoff, medical director of the department's bureau of infectious disease and laboratory sciences. The state is also investigating two possible COVID-associated deaths and one RSV-associated death in patients under 18 years old. 'These deaths underscore the need for kids to be vaccinated,' Dr. Madoff emphasizes. 'Everyone should get a flu vaccine, everyone over the age of 6 months.' Boston health officials warned of a 114% increase in flu cases in late December, with children bearing the brunt of the surge. The state is urging residents to get vaccinated, with just 1 in 9 residents vaccinated against COVID and 1 in 3 vaccinated against flu. 'Flu and COVID vaccination rates in Massachusetts have been 'really lagging' this year,' Dr. Madoff notes. The state is holding free flu and COVID vaccine clinics for children 6 months and older in January, with Boston leading the way. 'Kids do get quite ill with the flu, they also spread it to their classmates and to their parents and family at home,' Dr. Madoff adds. The state's flu activity is now 'very high,' with 9% of all hospitalizations associated with the flu, compared to 5% the previous week. 'Would not be surprising to see more' severe cases, Dr. Madoff warns, as the state battles the early peak of flu season. 'These deaths are a stark reminder of the importance of vaccination and preventive measures,' says Dr. Goldstein. 'We must act now to protect our children and communities from the devastating impact of the flu.' But here's where it gets controversial...
