SODOM's TOM ANGELRIPPER Expresses Frustration Over High Costs of Touring in the U.S.: 'It's Very Expensive'
In a recent interview with This Day In Metal, bassist and vocalist Thomas 'Angelripper' Such of the German thrash metal veterans SODOM discussed his decision to reduce the band's touring activities for the foreseeable future. With two children, a 31-year-old daughter and a 28-year-old son, Angelripper is now able to spend more time with them and pursue other interests. He plans to focus on re-releases for BMG and writing new lyrics for SODOM, while also exploring other creative endeavors.
Angelripper expressed his disappointment that he and his bandmates have not been able to tour in support of their latest album, 'The Arsonist', released in 2025. He acknowledged the discomfort of making such a decision, but emphasized his desire to enjoy his free time and pursue other activities, such as hunting. Angelripper also highlighted the financial strain of touring, particularly in the U.S., where the visa process is complex and expensive, costing $2,000 per person for working papers. He contrasted this with American bands who only need a passport to perform in Germany or Europe.
When asked if his break from touring is permanent or if he plans to return to performing with SODOM, Angelripper compared it to Slayer's Tom Araya, who took a similar break. He noted that while he enjoys being on stage, he doesn't want to waste time traveling and sitting in airports and hotels. Angelripper also mentioned that he is still working on re-releases and has no specific plans to return to touring, but he remains open to the possibility.
Angelripper's decision to reduce touring activities is not without controversy. Some may argue that it's a missed opportunity for the band to connect with fans and maintain their relevance. Others may question the financial implications for the band and their crew. What do you think? Do you agree or disagree with Angelripper's decision? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
