A Tragic Bus Crash: One Life Lost, Children Escaping Serious Injury
In a heart-wrenching incident, a school bus carrying children from St Paul's High School in Bessbrook was involved in a crash and overturned on the outskirts of Newry. The tragedy resulted in the death of the bus driver, identified as a respected and experienced member of Quinn Coaches, the company that employed him. The incident has left the community in shock, with neighbors describing how the children miraculously escaped serious injury, some even climbing out of the roof and windows.
The accident occurred on Tullyah Road, and emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after 3:45 pm. The road was closed for several hours, and at least one child was injured, though none were seriously hurt. The principal of St Paul's, Dáithí Murray, confirmed that the children involved were safe and had been collected by their parents. Mr. Murray expressed his concern in a letter to families, acknowledging the significant shock the incident must have caused.
The bus driver's actions were hailed as heroic by Newry and Armagh MLA Justin McNulty, who praised his quick thinking and bravery. McNulty stated, 'You think the worst and you think what could’ve possibly happened - it’s remarkable and a miracle.' The emergency services, including five ambulances, two advanced paramedics, one officer, and an ambulance doctor, responded swiftly to the scene, treating patients and ensuring the safety of those involved.
Despite the tragedy, the incident has also sparked a discussion on the importance of road safety and the role of emergency services in such emergencies. The PSNI spokesperson advised road users to avoid the Tullyah Road area, and the road has since reopened. The bus driver's name has not yet been released, and the investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
