A World Record Attempt, a Family Legacy, and the Pilates Connection
The Isle of Man is set to make history this weekend as a unique event combines a world record attempt with a celebration of a local family's legacy. The ambitious plan involves bringing together over 3,000 people for a giant Pilates class at Knockaloe, a site with a rich historical connection to the family in question.
This endeavor is the brainchild of Ramsey Crookall, a stockbroking and investment management firm, in collaboration with 34Moves and Visit Isle of Man. The goal is to break the world record for the largest Pilates class, an endeavor that holds a special significance for the firm's CEO, Joanna Crookall.
The family's connection to Knockaloe dates back to the First World War, when Joanna's great-grandfather secured the catering contract for the internment camp. Among the internees at Knockaloe was Joseph Pilates, who would later develop the exercise method that bears his name. Pilates, a boxer with a keen interest in fitness, wanted to keep his fellow internees healthy and fit, leading him to develop a range of exercises in the confined space of the camp.
This historical connection to Pilates is what initially sparked Joanna's interest in the event. She believes it's time for the world to recognize this fascinating story, especially given the growing popularity of Pilates. The event also serves as a way to showcase the Isle of Man to a global audience while bringing lasting benefits to the local community.
The idea for the world record attempt emerged as the organizers identified the potential to surpass the existing record of 3,486 participants, set in Turkey in 2013. Knockaloe was chosen for its ability to accommodate large crowds and its historical significance as a community site. Joanna's experience with the Royal Manx Show further confirmed the venue's capacity to host major events, having welcomed thousands of visitors in the past.
The event will feature a wellness and charity village, open from 10 am to 5 pm, with the world record Pilates class starting at 2 pm. This initiative not only celebrates a unique historical connection but also pays tribute to Joanna's grandfather, Ramsay Crookall, who served during the Second World War and founded the business on the Isle of Man 80 years ago. Despite his rare discussions about his wartime experiences, his legacy lives on through the company he established.
