Energy firm Enviromena has put forward a proposal to develop farmland between Bedale and Exelby, promising to generate enough clean energy to power approximately 13,830 homes annually. On the surface, it sounds like a win for sustainability. And this is the part most people miss... The project has faced over 430 objections, primarily due to concerns about the land’s historical value and its potential impact on the local environment and transport network. Bedale Town Council and several parish councils have also voiced their worries, adding weight to the growing opposition.
Enter the Say No To Stell Solar Farm group, a coalition of local residents determined to halt the project. Led by Justyn Castle, the group argues that many of the voices in favor of the development are not from the local community. Castle claims, 'It feels like a last-ditch effort by developers or landowners to push this through.' He emphasizes that their objections are rooted in genuine community engagement, such as their presence at events like the Bedale Christmas Fair.
To strengthen their case, the group has raised over £4,000, partly through the sale of a calendar featuring scenic images of the contested site. A portion of these funds has been used to commission an independent consultant, Bruce Bamber of Railton TPC Ltd, to assess the project’s impact on local transport. Bamber’s report highlights significant risks to pedestrians, cyclists, and equestrians, stating, 'The current access proposals pose an unacceptable danger to vulnerable road users.'
Enviromena, however, remains steadfast in its commitment to the project. Lee Adams, the company’s chief commercial officer, acknowledges the diverse opinions surrounding renewable energy initiatives. 'We respect the community’s right to voice both support and concern,' he says. 'Our goal is to maintain a transparent and open dialogue.' Adams also underscores Yorkshire’s crucial role in the UK’s transition to net zero, citing independent analyses that emphasize the need for additional solar capacity to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and enhance energy security.
